Baptism & Membership

As United Methodists, we practice infant baptism and believer’s baptism, understanding that every person, no matter the age, comes as a child before the Lord. For infants and those who cannot answer for themselves, the parents profess their faith and vow to raise this child in a Christian home so that one day, this child will commit his/her life to God and live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. For those who are able, they respond to the baptismal questions and membership vows for themselves.
United Methodists honor the baptism of other denominations and do not administer baptism to anyone who has already been baptized. “For while our baptismal vows are less than reliable, God’s promise to us in the sacrament is steadfast. Once baptized, we have been initiated into Christ’s body the Church and are members of Christ’s family” (UM Book of Worship, pg. 83).

Baptismal Covenant Questions and Membership Vows

  • Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin?
  • Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?
  • Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the Church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?
  • According to the grace given to you, will you remain faithful members of Christ’s holy Church and serve as Christ’s representatives in the world?
  • As members of Christ’s universal Church, will you be loyal to The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries?
  • As members of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?”
